Beginning with Volume 31 (1), JCHLA / JABSC will be moving from a quarterly to a tri-annual publication schedule.

We hope that with a reduced frequency we’ll be able to increase the number of submissions to the journal.

The Cochrane Library - pan-Canadian national license pilot update

The Pan-Canadian Cochrane Library Task Force thanks you for your support over the last ten months during the national license pilot.  The pilot, which began April 2009, has allowed us to compile compelling data that provides a solid rationale for a national license.

Background

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute
(CPSI) was established in December 2003 with a national mandate to build and
advance a safer health system for Canadians. It does this by fostering
collaboration between governments and stakeholders, supporting the development
of patient safety initiatives that will help the Canadian healthcare system
become the safest in the world. An independent not-for-profit corporation, CPSI
functions at arm's length from governments, system stakeholders and regulatory
bodies.

Interactive maps showing Canadian literacy and health literacy levels: a sobering picture

What part of your district would benefit most from a literacy program? What’s the average health literacy level in the neighbourhoods surrounding your hospital? This kind of granular data on literacy and health literacy levels is now available at a glance, thanks to interactive online literacy maps created by the Canadian Council on Learning.

Making the link between climate change and health

It feels auspicious that my first day of blogging is happening on Blog Action Day, an annual event which unites the world's bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Blog Action Day focuses attention on an issue of global importance, with the aim of sparking discussion and action. This year’s theme is climate change.

Now …..what does that have to do with health?

JCHLA consumer health information column: now in tasty bite-size blog format!

Hello and welcome. This new blog is our way of bringing JCHLA’s consumer health information column online, to a format that’s easier to discover and retrieve and to a space that’s more conducive to links and discussion. My plan is to pre-publish column content here on a regular basis and add some juicy extra content - event announcements, topical commentary, etc. - that won’t necessarily appear in JCHLA.

CHLA website move this weekend (October 17-18, 2009)

Update: Sunday afternoon

Looks like the domain name servers have been updated.  Now working on restoring email forwards, and distribution lists.  Like packing, when travelling, I'm always relieved to figure out what one thing I invariably forgot when I get to my destination.  Of course I forgot at least one thing in this whole operation too.  I forgot to get the email distribution lists off the old host before the domain change happened.  Oh well, I can reconstruct those...  Hope that was the worst of it!  (yes, I'm touching wood!)

Babs Flower - A Remarkable Life

Babs in her boat, near Kingston. Summer 2007

M.A. (Muriel Armstrong) Flower

Born November 1st, 1916 in Connecticut with family connections in both Nova Scotia and Palmyra, Ontario. Died September 8, 2009 at her home in Kingston, Ontario. A.k.a. 'Babs' to friends and colleagues, she enjoyed a remarkable life. Her curiosity and creative essence buoyed by her love of books have guided her countless adventures spanning more than nine decades. An innovative contribution, her 1987 report entitled Libraries Without Walls remains useful today as a snapshot and future roadmap for Canadian Health Libraries. In addition, a raconteur par excellence, her poems and stories chronicle some of her travels and life experiences vividly. ''She did it her way''!
