Course Description

The principal goal of the course is to enhance participants’ ability to engage People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the workplace in a positive and equitable manner. The course will address several included components: skills training (e.g. case study), attitudinal analysis (e.g. various attitudinal frameworks/models), and available resources (local, Canadian, international). The training session includes lecture, small group discussions/case studies, exposure to perspectives of a cross-section of PWDs (pre-recorded interviews), and through Q&A segments designed to encourage experience with the several topics and appropriate use of language.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Self-reflect on possible biases, misinformation, and assumptions associated with disability.
  2. Have a more coherent understanding of disability as a social construct.
  3. Be more skillful and comfortable when interacting with people with disabilities.

    Course Description

The main goal of this course is to help health librarians and health professionals better understand how equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) apply to their everyday work.

We want participants to leave with not just theoretical knowledge, but also with practical tools and the confidence to apply those tools when they’re serving diverse communities.

We also hope to spark ongoing self-reflection about the power dynamics within their workplaces and the role of allyship in creating truly welcoming and equitable spaces.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

    • Explain what Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Cultural Agility mean and how they relate to health librarianship.
    • Recognize how systems of oppression and power imbalances show up in health information spaces.
    • Apply Intersectionality and Positionality to understand how their own experiences and identities shape how they see and serve others.
    • Identify biases and microaggressions and respond appropriately if they witness or experience them.
    • Define Allyship in a way that’s meaningful in their professional roles — and begin to practice empathy and solidarity as tools for change.
